Kamala Devi Harris was born on October 20, 1964, in Oakland, California. Her mother, Shyamala Gopalan Harris, was a breast cancer researcher who emigrated from Tamil Nadu, India. Her father, Donald Harris, was a Stanford University economics professor who came from Jamaica.

Harris has several notable relatives. Her mother's side includes T.N. Srinivasan, a prominent economist, and G. Harigopal, a former Indian ambassador. Her father's side includes Basil Blackwell, a Jamaican councilman, and Alton Banbury Jr., a former U.S. ambassador to the Bahamas.
Marriage and Children
Harris married Douglas Emhoff, a lawyer, in 2014. She became the stepmother of his two children, Cole and Ella. Harris refers to herself as the "Momala" to Cole and Ella.
