The English Football League: A Look at the Divisions and Clubs

Introduction

Beneath the prestigious Premier League, the English Football League stands as a cornerstone of the English football pyramid. Comprising 72 clubs spread across three divisions, the EFL offers a competitive and exciting environment for teams to showcase their talents and strive for promotion to the top flight.

The Championship

The Championship, also known as the Sky Bet Championship, is the second tier of the English Football League. Twenty-four teams compete for the chance to be crowned champions and earn automatic promotion to the Premier League. The teams that finish in third to sixth place enter the playoffs, with the winner earning the third and final promotion place.

League One

League One, the third tier of the English Football League, consists of 24 teams. Similar to the Championship, the champions earn automatic promotion to the Championship, while the teams finishing in second to fourth place compete in the playoffs for the second promotion spot.

League Two

League Two, the fourth and lowest tier of the English Football League, features 24 teams vying for promotion. The champions are guaranteed a spot in League One, while the teams finishing in second to seventh place participate in the playoffs, with the winner securing the third and final promotion place.
